The dynamic of our neighborhood has made a radical change, almost over night. This used to be the wild college (we're half a block from UNO) party street. With the exception of some frat boys who lived across the street for a few months, it was a respectful wild party street. Nobody made too much noise, but there were still at least a couple of parties every weekend. Within the past couple of months, most, if not all, of the wild college kids have moved on and young families have taken their place. We have easily 10 kids on this short street of duplexes. That's a lot. Yeah, the babies are loud, but they're cute to watch, so it's okay. Another strange thing is that two of my neighbors are taking care of their mentally handicapped brothers. I don't know if they're retarded or autistic, so we'll stick to calling them handicapped. The African woman across the street had her brother tonight and he had a pretty big tantrum. He was screaming and hitting himself and crying. It was sad, but things were under control. She went upstairs and let him get it out of his system on the front porch. Partly because of the noise and partly because I need sticks for making my Voodoo dolls, I was out there watching this little drama unfold. Somebody called the cops. Guess who the nice woman, who works full time, goes to school full time and still manages to take care of her handicapped brother, thinks is the evil bitch who made the call? That's right! The nosey broad out there watching the whole thing and cutting sticks off her weed trees! This makes me feel really bad, as I have nothing but admiration for this woman for sacrificing herself and working so hard for her brother. Unlike some people, who choose to make fun of other's misfortunes (joking about thwe fact that his 15 year old nephew may have testicular cancer and has already lost one of his testicles), this woman has nothing but compassion in her heart. I hope that I can convince her that I'm not the cop-calling culprit.
