So my father-in-law wants us to have Persephone christened. My being an Atheist and all, he mentioned this to Joe. Hell, he said he'd be happy just to daub a little holy water on her head at home.
Joe's dad is a delightfully strange man. He's a history fanatic, so he has a negative view of religion and it's involvement in some pretty atrocious events. But he is also Catholic, raised by an extremely religious Italian mother. So there's this little nagging voice in the back of his mind saying "limbo, might want to hedge your bets."
My first instinct was to offer to throw some holy water in her bath to make Joe's folks happy. It can't hurt her. It's just water and, without the doctrine, not going to cause her to believe all sorts of horrible religious nonsense.
But then I got to thinking, in the "hedge your bets kind of way." what if there is some sort of afterlife where you're judged? And Persephone, all baptized and everything, goes up for judgment and they say "well, you've lived a good life. Kind to children and animals. Never deliberately cruel. Helped people out when you could.... Wait a second... What is THIS? You're a member of that group that started the crusades, burned Jews, endorsed slavery and killed untold numbers of indigenous people all in the name of spreading their beliefs? To hell with you!" And I don't want that!

Oh yeah and I'd be a terrible hypocrite to do it, too.
