I got online for the first time today to find an email from my brother-in-law. It said simply "Joe. Call Mom. Dad's in the hospital". Joe's dad has had open heart surgery twice and as many heart attacks. He was having chest pains this morning, so Bill (brother-in-law) took him to the hospital for tests. As of now, he's okay, but he's been smoking again and he's been on the Atkins diet. Not the diet of choice for heart patients. After the call, I got back online to get the following email about my eight month old godson: sorry, but in the interest of saving time i'm just pasting in what i sent my mom. jennifer --------------------------------- friday: deacon had a febrile seizure today, his fever spiked up over 104, he lost consciouness and stopped breathing, efrem did cpr and we got him to oakwood ER and they got the fever down. they're transferring him to providence now, i'm home getting a bag; they did blood, urine, spinal tap, all kinds of tests, ruled out flu, meningitis, pneumonia, all they know is his white blood celll count is 3x what it should be. we'll see, keep your fingers crossed. saturday update: deacon is in providence hospital. they don't know what's wrong with him yet, they're doing more tests and etc. he's still on IVs for antibiotics & fluids. his fever was up & down all night, but controlled enough so no more seizures. they said last night he'd be there at least 2-3 more days, and i'm not sure if that's the latest word. efrem and i are staying with him, but are in & out at home to pick stuff up, maybe once every few days sunday: deacon's still in the hospital, and there are some complications. the antibiotic is treating the infection (and they still don't know where that's coming from) but his white blood cell count is still high (not quite double now, not triple). his fever is still up & down. they found some kind of problem with his kidneys, they'll be doing more testing over the next few days. we have to wait for a pediatric specialist to see him to see whether he'll have to have surgery or not for his kidneys, a blockage or "reflux", they're not quite sure. he may have to be on preventative antibiotics for the next 6 months to a year. they say any kind of infection increases his chances for kidney damage or failure, so they have to make sure to watch him constantly and treat any & all infection first. in the meantime he's got to stay on antibiotic ivs, fluid ivs, monitors, etc., which means we'll be in the hospital for awhile. they say at least tuesday before we can see the specialist, they think. you can reach us on our cell phones and we'll check messages there and at home occasionally.we're tired and scared but we're ok, basically. efrem's having the hardest time because the baby is very clingy on him lately, but he's bearing up well, as he does. i'm a nervous wreck but am trying not to be.the doctor says the good news is that if it is what she thinks it is it's treatable, not an unknown. cross whatever you haven't already crossed for us. Please cross your fingers for my father-in-law and godson. I'm going to go freak out now.
