What is it about the American media that makes them do everything in their power to compromise due process in the justice system? The other night, Joe turns on Entertainment Tonight and they are running a story about an episode of CSI with a serial sniper. Every time they mentioned the similarities between this TV show and the sniper attacks in the D.C. area, they flashed pictures of the two men charged in that case. Legally, these men are INNOCENT. But they have no shot at a fair trial when the jury pool is corrupted by a national media that treats it as a given that they are already guilty. If (and that is a big if) and when the prosecution proves, beyond a reasonable doubt, that they are guilty, they will have fertile ground for appeal with the media's misbehaviour. That is only one case. Back before the jury selection process began in the Tim McVeigh trial, Homicid: Life on the Street had an episode with white supremists blowing up city busses. One of the characters on the show, describing how a person gets to that point, finished off her speach with "and the next thing you know, you have another Tim McVeigh"! Today, Court Tv was set to air the penalty phase of the Rabbi Fred Neulander murder trial. Instead, we were treated to an understandably livid judge closing part of the proceedings becase an ABC news reporter had contacted SEVEN of the jurors before the penalty phase. What the fuck? Two and one half hours later, they MAY be starting the actual penalty phase now. Apparently, the jurors weren't tainted and the offending reporter is probably going to jail. Good! I hope she gets harassed every moment she's in there!
